Beagles are members of the Hound group.  They means they are driven by their nose.  You can call them and they will come running to you -but if a whiff of something wonderful hits their nose ..they will stop and smell before finishing their journey.  Of course, a smelly treat in your hand can usually override other smells. They are fun-loving, curious little dogs that make great pets.

Beagles are very docile pets which makes them wonderful pets for children.   One of our Pocket Beagle pups was the object of photograph that won a contest in a county fair around here.   He was in a wagon being pulled around by an 18 month old little boy.  One of my favorite images is of the "Red Baron" as a pup snuggled up with my granddaughter watching cartoon.  She had him under the arm pits and his little body was just hanging.  He was so happy to be with her.

Beagles  are not, by nature, destructive puppies.  They go through normal teething and need some small chew toys  but they do not have the "itchy teeth syndrome" that some of the bigger dogs seem to have.

Our dogs are not barkie.  Beagles, like most dogs, will bark if they are see something that is unusual.  They bark when they see me coming towards the kennel.  They bark at other dogs that may come near the kennel. They  bark to alert their Pack ( that is you) of something that you need to see. I have not found them to bark for no reason. They do not bark continuously.

Beagles  are bred to bark on the trail - trailing deer or rabbits, etc.  - so they may bark when playing with you if they are trailing you. Beagles are not hyper dogs.  They play and then lay down and sleep.  They are not high need dogs.  They are happy to be with you and the family but  don't have an agenda of their own.

However, it is important to have time to walk or exercise your pup every day.  Walking is an important part of the development of a dog and also is important in the development of your relationship with the pup
