My puppy will not stop jumping on me. What can I do to stop it? Don't dispare! You are not alone. This is a common problem. The basic reason for the problem is related to normal puppy behavior. When a puppy greats an older dog, it rears up on it and tries to lick the older dog's mouth. This appears to be some sort of submission gesture by the pup. Sort of like "I am glad to see you but I am little and you are the big dog". I have found that puppies tend to greet people in the same way. It begins as a normal behavior from the pup. Then it changes from "I am just a little pup" signal to a "Pet me, pet me! command from the dog. This happens because people reward the puppy behavior.. When the puppy jumps up, people reach down and pet the puppy. Wrong!! We don't want the puppy to jump on us. If you want to let your dog jump up on you, it should do it when you ask it to - not when the dog wants to! With my little puppies, I gently push them down on the ground when they jump up and say "No". When they have all 4 feet on the ground, many pups will sit down. As they sit down , I say "sit" and ONLY PET THE PUP when it is sitting down. The same is true for older puppies. Don't reward the dog when he jumps up. Don't scream at the pup. Say No and turn away from the dog. When the dog calms down, ask it to sit and reward the SIT bwith a treat or by petting the pup. Just like with kids, you have to maintain the "rule". If you aren't consistent, you can't change the behavior. Got a question? Email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
