My puppy piddles when guests visit our home? What can I do? There are several reasons why a puppy may wet when meeting new people. First, the puppy may be very timid or submissive. This fear causes it to loose a little urine. The second reason is the puppy "feeds" off the energy that is naturally generated when guests arrive. Again the excitement causes it to piddle. Speaking in a negative tone to the timid pup is only going to increase its submissiveness - which will not help the situation at all. For the over excited pups, the negative tone may also not be effective because the puppy does not know what the correct response would be. One thing that works well for most of the reasons that might cause a puppy to "piddle" is to limit the puppy's access to visitors. This might mean putting the puppy in another room or in its crate when visitors arrive. Once all the "greetings" have been exchanged and the you and the guests have settled down into a relaxed mood, bring the puppy into the group. Ask your guests at first not to pet or look at the puppy. Just continue on with your normal behavior ignoring the puppy. The puppy should calm and down and relax. Once the puppy is relaxed then the guests can be pet the puppy. You want to reward the puppy for having the correct attitude. Petting and attention is reward to the puppy. So don't reward the puppy when it is excited. The correct attitude is calm and relaxed. Reward calm and relaxed. Another technique which works well for older puppies is to not let them them be the first to great your visitors. The puppies and dogs should be behind you. They should be relaxed and accept your visitors calmly into your home. |
